Yala National Park is a national park in Sri Lanka, bordering the Indian Ocean and covering 979 kmยฒ (378 sq mi). It was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900. It hosts diverse ecosystems ranging from moist monsoon forests to freshwater and marine wetlands, and is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants, Sri Lankan leopards, and 44 mammal species. It is one of the 70 Important Bird Areas in Sri Lanka, harbouring 215 bird species including six endemic species.
Udawalawe National Park is located on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka. The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, and to protect the reservoirโs catchment area. The reserve covers 30,821 hectares (119 sq mi) and was established on 30 June 1972.
Whale watching is the practice of observing whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. It is mostly a recreational activity, but it also serves scientific and educational purposes. In 2008, around 13 million people worldwide participated in whale watching. The industry generates approximately $2.1 billion annually in tourism revenue and employs around 13,000 people.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a captive breeding and conservation institute for wild Asian elephants, located in Pinnawala village near Kegalle in Sri Lanka. It has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2023, 71 elephants from three generations were living at the orphanage.
Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka by population and the de facto commercial capital of the country. The metropolitan area has an estimated population of 5.6 million. It is the financial centre of the island and a major tourist destination located on the west coast.
Bentota is a coastal town in Sri Lanka, located in Galle District of the Southern Province. It is about 65 km south of Colombo and 56 km north of Galle. Bentota is situated on the southern bank of the Bentota River mouth, at an elevation of 3 metres above sea level.
Kandy is a major city in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was the last capital of the Sinhalese monarchy under the Kingdom of Kandy from 1469 to 1818. The city is surrounded by hills and is considered the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. It is home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site declared in 1988.
